Materials: 16" Block
7 yards white
Assorted scraps (C) piece 6"x6"
(B) piece 2-1/2" x 7"
1. Enlarge pattern pieces to 16" size and transfer to template material. Be sure to mark the line bisecting the pattern on your template.
Note: Because each pattern piece must be traced around, I used a 1/2" seam allowance to help prevent stretching and distortion of the fabric
2. Cut white fabric into 4-/2" wide strips. For the scrap strips I used lot of fat quarters, but if using true scraps, follow the size listed above for the B and C pieces.
3. Sew each scrap strip to a white strip. Just lay the scraps along the edge of the white in a continuous line. Press seams toward the scrap pieces.
4. Lay the template onto the seamed fabric, lining up the center line on the template with the seam line. Trace around. The C/D template forms the corner of the block, so you will need to reverse half the pieces. Allow 1" between tracings.
5. Position your ruler along the drawn lines, extending the edge beyond the line the amount of the seam allowance. With your rotary cutter, cut along the ruler.
6. Lay out the A/B units to form the center of the block. Arrange the C/D units around the outside edge, mixing the patterns until you have a pleasing combination of color. Sew A/B units to C/D units.
7. Sew units together to form blocks.
Below are some other patterns that can use this same technique:
